Red Cross Commissions Health Centre In Kuje

The
Nigerian Red Cross Society (NRC) in collaboration with centre for
Leadership, strategy and Development at Wednesday commissioned a health
centre at Kuyizhi community of the Kuje area council.
The community which has been in existence in the last one hundred and fifty years according to the chief, Mr. Ibrahim Reje, has never enjoyed any government benefit despite it nearness to the capital city.
Kuyizhi is located 20 kilometres from Kuje town of Kuje area council with about 33 households and population of one thousand has no functional water, no pit latrine, no access to healthcare facility, no electricity and other infrastructure to make life easy was discovered by an NGO that made their plight known to the NRC.
The health centre, to some of the villagers, is a dream come true and assurance that their life expectancy in the community will increase as many of them die of untreated illness while women die as a result of child birth complications.
Speaking during the commissioning, the President of the NRC, Governor Rochas Okorocha, who was represented by Mr. Musa Babangida, National Adviser Branches of NRC said the project was as a result of risk reduction initiative embarked on by some of NRC partners with the aim of improving resilience, capacities of Kuyizhi people regarding risk reduction in the areas of health, water and livelihood.
While appreciating the cooperation and commitment of members of the community towards the achievement of the project, the president said it is to support government’s effort to make life better for the vulnerable in the society.
The three rooms health centre has a delivery room, consulting and resting room which was handed over to the primary healthcare dept of Kuje for maintenance.
Meanwhile, the HOD Health, Kuje Area Council and the Primary health care coordinator, Dr Veronica Yama, said two staff have already been assigned to oversee the centre and attend to the community’s need in terms of healthcare.
