NYSC Redeploys Corps Members From Yobe, Borno, Others

Submitted by LEADERSHIP EDITORS on November 16, 2011 - 1:31am
As the 2011 Batch C orientation exercise commenced yesterday nationwide  for the compulsory one year national service, the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC)  has begun the  redeployment of Corps members from Yobe, Borno, and others states where security of the corps members are being threatened.

Hundreds of 2011 Batch C corps members  posted to Yobe, Borno, Taraba, Sokoto, Kaduna and other states in the North and most Batch ‘B’ already serving in these  states have besieged the directorate headquarters of the NYSC in Abuja, seeking to be redeployed to other states of their choice.

When LEADERSHIP visited the directorate headquarters yesterday, over 500 corps members  of Batch B and C 2011  have been redeployed while many were still waiting either to submit their call up letters or just collect  their letters of redeployment to other states in the South.

Speaking with LEADERSHIP yesterday, a deputy director from the department of Mobilisation, Mr. E. B Adewuyi,  confirmed the redeployment exercise of Batch B 2011 from Yobe and Borno states . He, however,  stated that his department was not in charge of the redeployment of Batch C 2011 corps members.

He said: “The redeployment is for those who are already serving in those states, and orientation is for prospective corps members, so these are two different things, the redeployment of Batch C is not from our department, so I don’t know much about it, but every corps members have the right to seek for redeployment from either Yobe or Lagos or any states, we will not deprive any of their right but when you apply, it may be granted. It is not automatic . But most of those who apply through us now are Batch B 2011, so we are sensitive, if we feel the situation is dicey and you ask for relocation, we may grant it,” he said.

A batch B corps member that spoke to LEADERSHIP, but do not want her name in the print said: “I am seeking for redeployment from Yobe State, because the security situation there is getting worse everyday, that bomb blast during the Sallah celebration killed some corps members and I don’t want to be a victim. Those of us in Yobe know that corps members were killed even though it was not announced. So I want to be redeployed to Lagos.

Another male corps member  said: “All of us you are seeing here are from Yobe and Borno states, we want to be redeployed, we cannot go back to those states because it is not safe over there. Do you know that some of our colleagues were killed during this last bomb blast? It is too risky. We are told that our letters are ready but that we should go back to our states of service to collect it, we don’t know why they would do that,” he quarried.
